Torrey Pines High School
Orchestra Program
The award-winning Orchestra Program at Torrey Pines consists of the Orchestra and the Advanced Orchestra (Chamber Strings). Both classes are open to string players who have prior experience playing their instrument. Enrollment into Advanced Orchestra is by audition only. No audition is necessary for Intermediate Orchestra; however, the class is not for beginners. Students who do not audition, or who are not offered a spot in Advanced Orchestra, will be placed in Intermediate Orchestra.
Intermediate Orchestra
The Intermediate Orchestra is open to 9th – 12th grade students. No audition is required, but players must be proficient on their instrument. This ensemble studies repertoire at an intermediate to advanced level and trains musicians in ensemble and chamber performance, orchestral literature, and proficiency in playing their instrument. This ensemble earns high marks at the SCSBOA festival each year and often advances to the SCSBOA regional competition.
Advanced Orchestra
The award-winning TPHS Advanced Orchestra is our top level string ensemble. Enrollment is by audition only. This class is open to 9th – 12th grade students, but consists primarily of upperclassmen. This ensemble studies repertoire at the collegiate level. Students in this class have the opportunity to perform in a high-level chamber ensemble setting while studying challenging classical and contemporary works. The ensemble advances to the SCSBOA regional festival each year, where it consistently earns Unanimous Superiors.
